Facebook may face legal action for violating privacy law

News on Social Marketing, according to Reuters, a deadline has been set by the German federation of consumer organizations, Germany’s biggest consumer lobby group, for Facebook to fix what they believe is violation of privacy laws with its new app centre or potentially face legal action. They said that Facebook divulging customer data through its new app centre without notifying users.

A spokeswoman of the organization said that legal action against the social network will be considered if it fails to address the problem by September 4.

This deadline comes just weeks after the Hamburg Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information said that the investigation into Facebook’s policies on tagging photos, retaining and deleting data and the level of control users have over their information will be reopened.

Two years ago, Germans asked that their homes be deleted from Google’s Street View, as they fear that their privacy will be invaded due to memories of the Nazis’ Gestapo and East Germany’s Stasi secret police.

Sustained by its global user base of almost 1 billion, Facebook was the first American company to debut with a value of more than $100 billion in its initial public offering in May. But because of an uncertain sales outlook, it has shed almost 60 percent of its value.

By early October, an Irish watchdog responsible for ensuring that Facebook complies with European and Irish data protection, will determine whether Facebook will be facing legal action under European privacy laws.
