Google’s Metatag Helps Googlebot Identify Web Content Belonging to Google News

News on Google Marketing, according to Brafton : to help its search crawler detect news stories, Google announced on its Google News blog, the rollout of a metatag. This new_keywords tag allows Googlebot identify which web content belongs in Google News and ensure the articles of those using news content marketing reaches News readers.

Even with the advancement of Googlebot in recent years, it still can’t determine the importance of figurative language in certain cases. According to Rudy Galfi, product manager for Google News, determining whether content is news based on its headlines and URLs is still difficult for Googlebot.

“The news_keywords metatag is intended as a tool,” Galfi wrote, “but high-quality reporting and interesting news content remains the strongest ways to put your newsroom’s work in front of Google News users.”

However, Galfi reiterated Google’s insistence that companies should develop high-quality content to rank well in search, even with the availability of this feature. The metatag is a tool that augments companies’ SEO efforts, but it will not make poorly written content stand out.

For marketers, standing out in Google search can help increase website traffic and drive authority. Google’s search market share exceeds 65 percent, as shown by comScore and Compete’s recent data.
