Internet Access a Basic Human Right

News on Social Marketing, according to The Atlantic Wire, internet access is declared by the United Nations as a basic human right in a report by Frank La Rue, a human rights watchdog role appointed by the UN Secretary General. The report gives emphasis on the importance of the internet as “an indispensable tool for realizing a range of human rights, combating inequality, and accelerating development and human progress.” It also stated that “facilitating access to the Internet for all individuals, with as little restriction to online content as possible, should be a priority for all States.” La Rue’s report, which was presented to the General Assembly on Friday, was the result of a year’s meetings with local human rights organizations around the world.

As a communication platform, the UN report tremendously supports the internet but it also cautions the society on how it can threaten power brokers. Because of the internets characteristics, such as speed, worldwide reach, relative anonymity, and with features that allows users to spread information in “real time”, fear was also created amongst the Governments and the powerful.

Because of these fear, restrictions on the Internet has been increased with the use of sophisticated technologies to block content, monitor and identify activists and critics, criminalization of legitimate expression, and adoption of restrictive legislation to justify such measures.

Twitter Generates More Revenue from Mobile Ads

News on Twitter Marketing, according to The Wall Street Journal, the potential growth in mobile advertising is enormous, but has been elusive for many companies. However, after offering mobile ads in April, Twitter Inc. is showing early signs of success selling advertising on mobile devices.

Twitter is now producing most of its revenue from ads shown to its users on mobile gadgets rather than from ads on Twitter.com. This is because people who see a Twitter ad on their phones are more likely to click it.

Twitter says that its mobile-advertising campaign is successful because a company can easily convert any tweet into an ad. And with most of its users active on mobile devices (about 60% of its 140 million monthly users), it can surely generate high interaction with its ads.

Although declining to specify its advertising revenue, Twitter is expected to make $259.9 million from advertising this year, an increase from an estimated $139.5 million in 2011.

With a private-market valuation of about $8.4 billion, expectations are high that Twitters advertising sale will increase ahead of an initial public offering that the company expect in a year or more.

According to Adam Bain, Twitter’s president of global revenue, “We know that mobile is how people access Twitter, it’s where people are overall, and we know it’s where the business is.”
