Don’t worry…….. this is just a test on reactions. If this headline caught your attention, then you’ve fairly well touched the magic that social media has been creating. Well, I could be wrong, but isn’t it true that headlines like these are what attracts a lot of attention?
This subject reminds me of an interesting quote:
“We don’t have a choice on whether we do social media. The choice is how well we do it.”
-Erik Qualman
The video below is worth watching too!
Social media has become so popular, that in 10 years, studies predict 40% of the Fortune 500 will be replaced. Fortune 500 is a list of companies with the highest stock values, considered to be titans of the business world. Given the rise of technology, new powers are rising and the old ones will be replaced by more digital, pocket-handy companies.
By world population standings, China and India vie for first and second place but, the third is surprisingly not a massive country….it’s Facebook. In fact, 5 out of 10 of these top highly-populated countries are fully digital with three in the top 5…..outnumbering the United States and Indonesia. This could be due to the fact that 50% of the world’s population is under 30 years of age.
A famous study shows that 53% of the young would even rather lose their sense of smell rather than technology. Find it as humor or as proof of bad hygiene, but there are more people who own a digital device than people who own a toothbrush.
Better still, all this technology doesn’t come in a machine the size of your refrigerator or even one the size of your telephone. They come in hand-held packages as mobile and media devices are merging to become one machine.
Even in love and relationships, media is now playing a major role as 1 of every 5 heterosexual couples meet online, as does every 3 of 5 homosexuals. Unfortunately, it’s not all paradise: 1 in 5 divorces happen to include social media. And privacy ? Forget it ! Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, Weibo, Snapchat, LinkedIn, and YouTube are all websites for the documentation of your life.
Google is breaking ground with 20% of the searches on its search engine happen for the first time each and every day ! That’s a lot for 7 billion people. LinkedIn has 2 new members every second, catering to webbies as young as 13. Hey, even seniors are becoming popular on Twitter as more and more create their accounts with #seniorsrock.
The market is almost run by social media with advertising by both companies and consumers amounting to 93% of buying decisions coming from reviews generated by social media. Brands and businesses rely so much on their online reputation that web programming and information technology has hit the world harder since the days of young CGI and computer maintenance. Technology has become so woven into our lives that even children at the age of 3 know how to use them.
Social media has become a place for meeting, greeting, buying, selling, informing, and becoming informed. This popular takeover has all happened in less than ten years. And you thought an alien invasion to be too far off ?
